The Serengeti - Part One
The name comes from the Maasai word
"Siringet" which means "endless plains".
Yup, great big wide open
spaces....
and lions!!
What's even more wonderful than
lions??
Why, lion cubs, of course!!
So are there any other animals
roaming the savannah? Why sure, see the wildebeast in the
background?
Now, how about some more lion
shots?
Okay, okay, on to the rest of the
animal kingdom....
Antelope are quite a common sight in
the Serengeti and there are many varieties.
These two above are called Grant's gazelle.
Whereas these two are Thomson's
gazelle.
And these are topi.
And these are, uh... they're uh...
DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY
FRIGGIN' KINDS OF ANTELOPE THERE ARE ON THIS PLANET?!!
What am I? A bleeding antelope expert?!
Sheesh! How about "water buck"?!
Might be water buck.
These little guys are soooo small...
how small are they??
Dik-dik's only grow to be about fifteen inches tall.
Yep, vultures really do seem to be
just hanging around waiting for you to die.
Baby zebra!
Baby warthog!
A confused baby warthog (following a
female impala).
(By the way, impala make for some
tasty meat!)
And the hyrax... I lost count how
many times I overheard someone telling someone else,
"Did you know that the hyrax is the animal most closely related to
the elephant...."
Just what is it that these little
guys appear to be so worried about?
(Besides being eaten by one of
these, of course.)
That's some mouse trap!
We were yards from our vehicles at
this point and everyone was clearly
a little more alert after spying this guy snoozing with his jaws
open.
Ah, but did you know that the
African animal considered most dangerous to humans is the
buffalo?
Try staring a pair of these
down.
