On our fifth day, Wednesday, we drive out from Hilo up to the visitor's center on the Mauna Kea access road. We then set off to hike up the remaining 4000 ft. to the top of Mauna Kea (13,790 ft.) enjoying the spectacular and changing scenery. We make it up in about five hours and then hang out a couple of hours for the sunset before hitching a ride back down with somebody. Back at the visitor's center, we hang out at a stargazing party for a while before returning late to Hilo.
